Primary Children’s 12 Days of Miracles: Day 1
When you ask the Sperry family if they believe in miracles, their faces light up and you get a resounding “Yes, we believe!” After waiting in the hospital for 178 consecutive days this year, Matthew Jr. received a new heart. This was the second heart transplant for this brave 4 year-old.
There have been too many miracles to count. The advancements in medicine, the selfless gift of life from organ donors, and of course the timing.
The greatest miracle for Chrissy, Matthew Jr.’s mom, is how this experience has changed their entire family. His brothers, Joshua and Luke, are so happy to have their baby brother home. They play a lot. Because of Matthew Jr.’s immune system they can’t have friends over, go on vacations, and have to be vigilant about germs. Chrissy is amazed that her kids haven’t complained. They are willing to make any sacrifice for their brother. In fact, they prefer to spend time playing together, rather than hanging out with friends. This holiday season has been poignant, and they have focused on doing simple things together at home, as a family.
This experience has challenged and tried this family, but it has also brought them closer. They have all realized just how important enjoying each day is, with the ones you love. Their family Christmas card says it best, “There is no place like home . . . for the holidays”
