The Surgical Services department opened its operating rooms to the public recently. The event drew about 1,200 people, including staff, their families, patients, and people who were just curious about what goes on in the O.R.
“We do this because the O.R. is usually a pretty restricted and closed environment and not a lot of people get to see what we do behind closed doors,” said Bill Millet, O.R. nurse manager.
Children had the opportunity to try out equipment, learn about anatomy and have their blood pressure tested. Many said their favorite part was putting on the surgical masks and gowns for a chance to perform a mock appendectomy.
The event wasn’t just for the kids. It also helped many parents better understand what might happen if they have to bring their children in for surgery. The open house program happens every two years. The staff spent months planning the event and it really showed. Mary Ann Douglas, director of Surgical Services, said she believes this year’s was the best open house yet. She calls it a huge success.
